Smithsonite (var: “Cobaltoan”) - $2400
(SOLD)
I think somebody once said, “Once you’ve
seen a Smithsonite from Tsumeb, you want to see them all”.
These specimens never become tedious as the color
is such an eye-catcher.
It’s amazing what a little Cobalt can do to create
this beautiful pink hue.
This specimen is essentially damage free on the display
side (save one tiny spot on the bottom right) which consists
of hundreds of gorgeous, lustrous, translucent pink rhombs
with attractive pearly luster.
The piece is glued to a small black clay base and
displays beautifully.

Smithsonite (var: “Cuprosmithsonite”) -
$1500
Smithsonite from Tsumeb is found in virtually
every color of the rainbow, and it remains on the most prolific
species from this most significant locality.
This specimen displays a gorgeous two-tone appearance,
one being an intense lime-green (with a hint of blue) and
the other being a darker rich green (with a silvery overtone).
A few contacts are the only thing keeping this from
being a rather expensive rock, because the color is as intense
as I have seen for this variety of Smithsonite, and to find
a specimen this size is not an easy task.

Smithsonite (var: “Cadmian Smithsonite”) with Rosasite -
$1600 (SOLD)
This is one of the less common Smithsonite
varieties from Tsumeb.
The crystals are a dull yellow color, but have zones
where they show more of a red shade due to the Cadmium content.
From what I am told, true Cadmian Smithsonite should
be white, and the Cadmium content should not color the crystals
themselves.
Nonetheless, this material has been known by this name for
a long time, and I am maintaining the information that was
passed down to me.
This specimen would be rare in and of itself, but
to find it associated with isolated green-blue spherical
aggregates of Rosasite is truly impressive, and the only
piece like it that I have seen.
Please note that a few of the Rosasites are contacted
showing a more a green color inside.
A very unique and attractive display specimen from
Tsumeb.

Smithsonite (var: "Cuprian Smithsonite") pseudomorph after Cerussite -
$2500 (SOLD)
One of my favorite Tsumeb specimens that
I have seen in my life.
I do not profess to be an expert on Tsumeb minerals,
but if there are more of these specimens around, I would
love to see them, as this is the only specimen of this material
that I have encountered.
The piece features lovely “snowflake-shaped” aggregates
of Cerussite which are coated and partially pseudomorphed
by light green and grey Smithsonite.
The end effect perfectly maintains the form of the
Cerussite, creating fine-looking “snowflakes” of Smithsonite.
Perhaps the
piece is not a true pseudomorph per se, but the overall
visual appeal and unusual paragenesis must be noted.

all of these specimens.
This material has been known by the name "Cadmian
Smithsonite" for
a long time, and I am maintaining the information that was

Smithsonite (var: “Cadmian Smithsonite”) phantoms -
$650 (SOLD)
This is one of the less common Smithsonite
varieties from Tsumeb.
The crystals are a rich butterscotch color, and a
bit stronger than most I have seen from Tsumeb.
This material has been known by the name
“Cadmian Smithsonite” for
a long time, and I am maintaining the information that was
passed down to me.
This piece features hundreds of beautiful, sharp,
sparkling, rhombohedra which are actually phantoms showing
a thin colorless zone on the exterior and a butterscotch
color within.
A real beauty as it falls into that “in between”
category with regard to color, and I’m sure could help round
out a Tsumeb Smithsonite suite.

Tsumeb mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

The crystals are a fine yellow color, like virtually
all of these specimens.

“Cadmian Smithsonite”
for
a long time, and I am maintaining the information that was
passed down to me.
This piece features several beautiful, sharp, translucent,
colorless rhombohedra with yellow zones on matrix.
I found a gemmy,
lustrous Cerussite crystal on the underside of the specimen,
which was not originally mentioned on the previous label.
A very attractive
specimen, and virtually damage free on the display side.

A beautiful multi-color Cuprian Smithsonite
from Tsumeb that grades from a very vibrant blue-green hue
into a golden-green/olive-green shade and ends with a golden-brown
color on the other end.
The crystals themselves are not especially large,
but they have a gorgeous sugary sparkle and sit very well
on a slab of Tennantite matrix.

Smithsonite - (SOLD)
Just when you think you’ve seen every
possible habit and color of Smithsonite from Tsumeb, the
mine just throws another one in your face to enforce the
fact that you’ll probably never see them all, no matter
how hard you try.
This is certainly the only Smithsonite that I have
seen like this from Tsumeb (or any other locality).
It is a highly sculptural specimen featuring columnar
or stalactitic growth with a sparkling luster and a very
light blue-green color.
A few of the “spires” are contacted, revealing a
dark brown color core of an unknown mineral.
The label accompanying this piece states that it
was once part of the famous Jim Minette collection some
years ago, so it has a lot going for it.
I think this piece would help to “round out” any
Tsumeb suite, and would especially (and more specifically)
fill a spot in a Tsumeb Smithsonite suite.

Tsumeb mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia
