The Leigh Price Mineral Collection
Leigh Price died from a massive coronary arrest while
working out in his home a few years ago. The heart
attack was not only tragic, but untimely and totally
unexpected. Leigh was a great physical specimen. He
spent a great deal of time exercising by riding his bike
in the hills around Evergreen and Bergen Park, lifting
weights, and running during the short summers we
have here in the mountains of Colorado.
Leigh was an avid mineral collector, but more
importantly he really loved minerals - all minerals.
Moreover, he was as knowledgeable as any mineral
collector around these days. He received his Ph.D. in
Geology from the University of California at Riverside
and was an instructor at Stanford University. In 1970,
he went to work at the U.S.G.S. here in Denver. Leigh’s
enthusiasm and knowledge about minerals was
immediately obvious, but as time went on we became
even more impressed with his uncanny field collecting
skills. Leigh had not only done well at known localities,
but he had also discovered several brand new
specimen localities here in Colorado. However, he had
his greatest success at some of the Arizona localities,
particularly the Red Cloud mine where in 1968, he
collected some of the finest Wulfenite specimens ever
recovered from the mine. Many of his Wulfenites rival
and even surpass the old classic Edwin Over
pieces.
We are offering for sale Leigh’s mineral collection.
Many of the specimens were self collected by Leigh.
We know that Leigh would be happy to see his
specimens go to other collectors who can also
appreciate them.
