Fluorapatite with Scepter "Cap" (fluorescent) / Locality - Himalaya Mine, Gem Hill, Mesa Grande District, San Diego County, California

While this mine is best known for its beautiful multicolor Tourmaline crystals that date back over 100 years, other species like Fluorapatite have been found sporadically, and are highly sought after by collectors. It's incredibly difficult to obtain fine, euhedral, well-formed sharp crystals of Fluorapatite from this locality in any capacity. Most of them are somewhat crude or etched, and often don't make for great specimens. THIS piece however is one of the best examples of the material that I've seen in terms of crystallization. It's notably sharp on all sides with smooth, pleasing crystal faces and even fairly good luster. The color is the typical rosy-pink hue that one is accustomed to seeing from the Himalaya, and the crystal is actually translucent when backlit. If that wasn't enough, the termination shows a rare and beautiful scepter "cap" which is almost never observed in any species of Apatite! Lastly, the piece came from Willard Perkins, one of the faces on the Mt. Rushmore of thumbnail collecting, and the namesake for the iconic "Perky Box". Overall, this is a superb thumbnail of this very hard to find material. No damage, save at the base where it detached from the pocket wall, and like many pink pegmatitic Apatites, it shows a strong yellow fluorescence under UV light! If you collect thumbnails, Apatites or minerals of California / San Diego County, don't miss out on this fantastic specimen that dates back several decades.
