Here we have a beautiful, rare and unique Sapphire crystal from the famous Hinthar-taung locality in Mogok, Myanmar (Burma). In sunlight, this Sapphire crystal shows a gorgeous blue color with a slight green overtone, but indoors it changes to a fantastic purple hue with a pinkish overtone. Additionally, we saw another color change under a cooler temperature flashlight bulb, which produced a soft greenish-yellow tone. This is a textbook example of an "Alexandrite"-type color change, where a mineral or gem will change from a cool color in sunlight to warm hue indoors, but you RARELY see it in Sapphires, let alone in complete crystals like this! For reference, I think halogen lighting is the best way to view the purple color indoors, but you might find another light source that produces a slightly different shade.

The piece is a complete doubly-terminated crystal (nearly a complete "floater") with excellent tapered hexagonal form and eye-catching "stepped" faces that run the length of the crystal, giving it depth and character. Internally, the crystal is what I would call "gem grade". It may not be 100% water clear, but it's VERY gemmy throughout. As I said, it's nearly a complete "floater", but I can see one tiny point of attachment on the base, so it's not fully crystallized on every surface. It's one of the most impressive, unique and desirable Sapphire crystals that I have ever seen from Myanmar.

I acquired this Sapphire specimen in 2008, and was told it could be a "one-of-a-kind" specimen for the locality, as the locals couldn't remember seeing another of this style that displayed such a wonderful color-change effect. We're used to seeing good Sapphire crystals from Sri Lanka, but the Mogok area doesn't typically produce too many of them historically. This piece is from the same locality that produced the amazing Painite specimens in the mid 2000s, and I purchased it direct from my source in Mogok. I have never seen another like it from anywhere in Myanmar.
