Red Beryl Specimens from Utah !

The “gooseberry” colored Beryls from the western United States known as Red Beryl are some of the most distinct, well known and classic of all gem minerals. Perhaps the most famous Red Beryls are found in the Wah Wah Mountains of western Utah. These world famous specimens are among the most highly sought after, arguably the most beautiful and certainly least common of all the varieties of Beryl. Typically, the crystals are small, and rarely large/clean enough to cut stones over 1 carat in weight. For more information on this locality and these specimens, please read the article in the Mineralogical Record, #10 (1979), pages 261-278: Famous Mineral Localities: The Thomas Range, Wah Wah Mountains, and Vicinity, Western Utah.

I recently acquired this parcel of specimens at the Tucson Show from a good friend who after diligent digging efforts discovered a brand new but small area that is producing some very attractive and exciting new specimens of this well known material.

These specimens are fresh out of the ground, and some of were glued to thin acrylic bases before I purchased them, and you will the edges of these bases in some of the photos. As is often the case with Red Beryl, they are more attractive in person than photos can indicate, so please keep this in mind when viewing the pieces in this update.

Enjoy!

Beryl (var: Red Beryl)

Locality: Wah Wah Mountains, Beaver County, Utah

Specimen Size: 8.0 x 6.7 x 4.4 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 1.5 cm

A very good sized, sharp, lustrous, doubly-terminated, virtually undamaged crystal of Beryl (var: Red Beryl) with great color and translucency sits atop a mound of white Rhyolite matrix. The unique and very rarely seen "gooseberry" color in the crystal is what makes these specimens so desirable and highly sought after among collectors and dealers. The crystal has a partial overgrowth of Rhyolite, but is otherwise perfect.

One of the largest crystals in the update which has great aesthetics to boot! The rather stout, well-formed, sharp, lustrous, hexagonal prism has superb color is quite gemmy in areas. The crystal sits beautifully atop a mound of contrasting white Rhyolite. There is a small irregular growth face on the front portion of the crystal, but does not detract from the appeal of this attractive and eye-catching display specimen

Beryl (var: Red Beryl)

Locality: Wah Wah Mountains, Beaver County, Utah

Specimen Size: 6.5 x 3.8 x 3.6 cm (thumbnail)
Largest Crystal: 9 mm

Several well-formed, sharp, lustrous prismatic crystals of Beryl (var: Red Beryl) are perched along a "ridge" of white Rhyolite. The quality of crystals combined with the fact that there is a healthy number of them on the same specimen is certainly impressive. There are some incomplete crystals mixed amongst the otherwise undamaged, translucent "gooseberry" color crystals, and for the price there's a lot of Beryl (var: Red Beryl) for your buck on one piece.

A very good sized, thick, gemmy/translucent "gooseberry" colored hexagonal crystal of Beryl (var: Red Beryl) with rather sharp, lustrous faces and good form sits on a small "hand sized" piece of white Rhyolite matrix. A few minor abrasions on the pinacoid are the only things keeping from being a perfect crystal.

This piece hosts a pair of richly colored prismatic crystals of Beryl (var: Red Beryl) sitting on the edge of a section of stark white Rhyolite. The two crystals are in great shape overall, and an incomplete crystal sits off to the side which helps the itensity of the color when backlit

Beryl (var: Red Beryl)

Locality: Wah Wah Mountains, Beaver County, Utah

Specimen Size: 5.2 x 4.4 x 1.8 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 2.0 cm

This LARGE (nearly one inch), thick, stout crystal with deep "gooseberry" color and sharp faces is aesthetically flaring off the side of contrasting white Rhyolite matrix. The base of the crystal is tapered due to the fact that at one point in time another crystal was growing up against the side, which obviously came off when the piece was taken out of the pocket. When backlit, the crystal shows good color and is in great shape overall. An attractive and impressive larger crystal that is fairly priced.

Beryl (var: Red Beryl)

Locality: Wah Wah Mountains, Beaver County, Utah

Specimen Size: 4.4 x 4.2 x 2.7 cm (thumbnail)
Largest Crystal: 8 mm

A nearly pristine, beautiful, sharp, doubly-terminated crystal of Beryl (var: Red Beryl) swith a few accessory crystals sit on a white an iron-stained Rhyolite matrix. The internal color of the Red Beryl crystals is VERY saturated and actually shows a slight orange hue, which obviously due to the iron presence on the matrix. Although I would not recommend this, one end of the main crystal is clean enough to cut a small gemstone. The great balance of the piece combined with the excellent quality make this miniature a worthwhile and desirable specimen of this highly sought after material

Beryl (var: Red Beryl)

Locality: Wah Wah Mountains, Beaver County, Utah

Specimen Size: 4.3 x 3.7 x 2.8 cm (miniature)
Largest Crystal: 1.5 cm

This handsome rich "gooseberry" color, doubly-terminated crystal of Red Beryl is perfectly perched atop a contrasting white Rhyolite matrix. The internal gemminess of this good sized crystal is certainly notable which is complimented by a few smaller, rough Red Beryl crystals on the side. Although the main crystal is not 100% complete, it is still very showy and eye-catching, especially with its placement right at the top of the specimen.

Largest Crystal: 6 mm

Two predominant, sharp, translucent, attractive "barrel"-shaped crystals of Beryl (var: Red Beryl) are flaring out of a mound of white Rhyolite matrix. There is actually one additional crystal on the specimen, and with the exception of one tiny "rub" on one of the main crystals, there is no damage. Although these crystals are smaller those on the other pieces in this update, they are still superb quality and have an intense "gooseberry" hue.
