Native Copper

Locality: Quincy Mine, Hancock, Houghton County, Michigan

Specimen Size: 10.8 x 8.2 x 4.1 cm (cabinet)

Here is a very dramatic, impressive, showy display piece featuring a large (6.3 cm), sharp, lustrous, well formed, elongated tetrahexahedron of Copper flaring out of the top of the specimen like a "claw" or a "talon". Below the "claw" are a few other very sharp crystals of Copper, which are illustrated in the photos. The overall quality, mixed with the great aesthetic appeal of this "cabinet" size specimen, would make this a wonderful addition to any collection.

Fluorite cast after Fluorite

Locality: De'An mine, Jiangxi, East Region, China

Everybody has probably seen these amazing new purple and green Fluorite specimens over the last year or so, but this one was unique in my experience with this material. Aside from the beautiful rich color and amazing effect that the crystals display when backlit, this specimen is actually a gigantic cast that seems to have formed over and been etched away from another very large octahedral Fluorite crystal. I've seen lots of groups of crystals, and plenty of matrix pieces, but this is first Fluorite after Fluorite cast that I've seen from this exciting new locality.

Vanadinite on Barite

Locality: Mibladen, Morocco

Specimen Size: 11.0 x 9.4 x 6.0 cm (cabinet)
Largest crystal: 1.2 cm.

This is NOT a contemporary specimen, but rather from about 25 years ago. This piece is loaded with large, sharp, rich blood red, relatively thick blades of Vanadinite sitting atop bladed and massive snow-white Barite matrix. I think most collectors would agree that the best matrix for Mibladen Vanadinites is Barite, and the color contrast in this specimen is just awesome. I must say that this piece is a great bargain for a specimen of this size (it was part of my father's old inventory, and I'm not raising the price above what he had on it in the early 1980's). You don't see many cabinet size Vanadinites on Barite that are below $1000 on the market today.

Cuprian Aragonite

Here's one for all you Tsumeb collectors out there. This is a beautiful specimen of water-green color, thin prismatic crystals of Aragonite with a little matrix on the base. The color is what's so unusual about this material. I've had this piece confirmed as being Cuprian Aragonite from two different sources. It's a great specimen of this relatively rare and esoteric carbonate from Tsumeb.

This is a great large thumbnail size specimen. A very aesthetic, well balanced group of red to reddish-brown tabular, stubby crystals of Vanadinite sitting atop white bladed Barite. It's actually very good quality and virtually undamaged. Don't let the photos fool you, this piece truly does look better in person.

Kutnohorite (ANALYZED AND CONFIRMED !!)

Locality: Pachapaqui District, Bolognesi Province, Ancash Department, Peru

Specimen Size: 8.3 x 5.8 x 4.6 cm (small cabinet)

This rare Manganese species is really only seen in good crystallized specimens from a handful of world-wide localities. This particular specimen is the very finest Peruvian Kutnohorite I've ever seen in my life. It might be the best one from Peru extant. The specimen features a large group of "reverse" sprays of light pink, prismatic Kutnohorite crystals sitting atop a Quartz and Sphalerite matrix. The piece originally was obtained by my father in 1971 on his first visit to Preu.  He originally had it analyzed, but the paperwork lost.  I had the piece analyzed by Jaroslav Hyrsl at the Tucson Show in 2013, and I have a copy of the analysis for the lucky person who chooses to buy this specimen. I can't find a better specimen pictured in any book or on any website to compare to this one. It would trim down to a superb, competition quality miniature as well.  A LEGIT KILLER for the material, and if you collect Peruvian minerals, this one certainly would be a cornerstone addition to your collection.  Arguably the best known CONFIRMED Kutnahorite from this mine, and arguably any Peruvian locality according to what I've been told by a handful of Peruvian mineral experts.

Now that this great U.S. locality is completely defunct, never to be mined again, there is a finite number of specimens on the market, and the best ones will disappear into collections fast. This specimen features a beautiful, lustrous, sharp, perfectly terminated undamaged crystal of Neptunite sitting in a nest of white Natrolite on matrix. A great example of this wonderful U.S. classic.

Great pieces from the Tri-state District are becoming a little more difficult to track down these days. This particular specimen features a superb, large, lustrous, cube (with minor octahedral modifications) of Galena aesthetically sitting on matrix. Sulfides are not always the easiest minerals to photograph, but this piece is very attractive and looks better than the photos would indicate.
