Greenockite from Scotland
Greenockite is Cadmium Sulfide (CdS), and is
dimorphous with Hawleyite. The difference is that
Greenockite is hexagonal, and Hawleyite is cubic.
Greenockite is by no means common in the world. It is
probably most well known in this country for the
occurrences in the New Jersey Trap Rocks.
These three specimens are not from New Jersey, but
rather great old classic Greenockite crystals from
Bishopton, Scotland which is the type locality.
This rare and beautiful species was first found when a
railroad tunnel was cut at Bishopton, near Paisley,
Renfrewshire, Scotland. The first crystals were found
circa 1810 and were originally thought to be Sphalerite.
The species was named after Lord Greenock, now
referred to as Earl Cathcart who first noticed it.
