Classic European Minerals
No. Cal Eng 13
CALCITE -
$5,500
This is such a perfect specimen of one the great
examples of a European classic. A superb, classic,
lustrous, aesthetic, attractive, Hematite-included, scalenohedral crystal group from this
desirable locality. I have thoroughly looked over this
piece and can find no visible damage. It's perfect all
around, and a collector quality piece such as this can
only be found in collections such as the British
Museum.
Locality: Frizzington, Cumberland, England

A great specimen with a good balance of beauty and
aesthetics. This piece has fantastic, sharp, lustrous,
gem, scalenohedral crystals flaring off matrix. The
quality of these crystals make it a very impressive
piece. I have seen countless English Calcites, and this
is one of the best that I've ever seen.

GAHNITE -
$950
This is the type locality for Gahnite and was named for
the renowned Swedish chemist who lived and worked
in Falun. Although the specimen is small, it is the
only one that I have seen for sale in my career as
a mineral dealer. It has some damage, but still has
fine, sharp, octahedral crystals on talc matrix.
Locality: Erik Mattsgruvan Stope, Falu Copper Mine,
Falun, Dalana, Sweden
Specimen Size: 2.5 x 2 cm. (Largest crystal: 1.5 cm.

HEMATITE "Ironroses" -
$3,500
When one in the mineral world talks about an
ironrose, this is what they mean. Superb,
lustrous, classic, large "ironroses" (or
"eisenrosen" in German) made up of tabular
hexagonal crystals with minor matrix. The Hematites
from St. Gotthard are not only some of the true
European classics, and they are nearly unobtainable
these days for collectors.
Locality: St. Gotthard (actually from a small mountain
named La Fibbia near the famous Gotthard Pass),
Canton Ticino, Switzerland
Specimen Size: 6.5 x 4 x 3 cm. (Largest "Rose": 4 cm.
across)
Collected: circa 1870's

PROUSTITE -
$7.500
An exceptional, gemmy, red
twinned crystal with some minor sulfosalts from a great
old classic locality !! A piece like this one does not
come along very often. Rarely does one see a
Proustite that didn't come from the western hemisphere
these days for sale. It would not only be an
outstanding addition for any collection, but this is a
"thumbnail" collector's dream !

photograph the more lustrous sulfides with success.

some minor damage to the specimen, but still a great
European classic.

ILVAITE -
$575
A great specimen and a very rare locality piece
from this wonderful old Italian island. Ilvaite is originally
named after the island of Elba which is the type locality
for the species. Interestingly enough, Elbaite is also
named for the same locality. This is the only locality
that I know of for which two species were named.
Locality: Campiglia Marittima, (on the mainland in front
of the island of Elba), Livorno Province, Tuscany, Italy
Specimen Size: 5.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 cm.

FLUORAPATITE on Ferberite -
$850
This piece has some great sharp, prismatic, gemmy
crystals on Ferberite with Arsenopyrite, Siderite and
Quartz. This is a less common color for Apatite from
Panasqueira. More often they are green, and these
baby-blue crystals are very attractive. This is one of the
more "modern" classic localities that I've got listed on
this page, but Panasqueira unmistakably fits into the
category of classic.
Locality: Barroca Grande mine, Panasqueira, Portugal
Specimen Size: 7 x 5.5 x 4 cm. (Largest crystal: 9 mm.
across)
