Vivianite from the Tomokoni adit,
near the Cañutillos mine, Bolivia

These specimens represent some of the better specimens I held back after the find at the end of Summer 2004, in the hopes that there would be more. Alas, no more have been found, and it seems that this locality will not produce any more of the specimens. I was very proud to offer the FIRST of what I consider to be some of the VERY BEST quality crystals of this species to ever come from Bolivia ! These crystals have without question the best luster of any Vivianite specimens to date from this country. Another outstanding feature is the wonderful color contrast between the vivid green Vivianite and the altered red Sandstone. These pieces have what I think is some of the best matrix for these crystals from Bolivia. It's not unstable like decomposing Limonite and it provides a much more appealing contrast than ordinary Pyrite.

I cannot stress how exciting these Vivianite specimens truly are. These pieces have such outstanding aesthetics, color, quality and gemminess. I have seen hundreds of Vivianite specimens from Bolivia in my life and these pieces sent my heart pounding when I first saw them.

John Sinkankas said this about Vivianite in his book, Mineralogy: "The goal of collectors in respect to Vivianite specimens, is to obtain single crystals from the Bolivian localities". John listed at least a dozen localities for Vivianite in his book and stressed that lustrous, gemmy crystals are almost impossible to obtain from any locality. He also states that "Crystals are seldom sharply terminated". The terminations on the following specimena are very sharp and highly lustrous.

Enjoy !!

This piece is a rather rare matrix specimen for this find. The thick red Sandstone matrix hosts a very attractive, sharp, lustrous, gemmy, emerald green color, doubly-terminated crystal. For the overall size, aesthetics and quality, this is one of the best small cabinet specimens that I purchased.

Here we have a very good sized crystal from this find showing very sharp faces, high luster, and rich emerald green color. The crystals has attached red Sandstone on the back, showing where it was attached to the matrix, so it is not totally perfect all the way aroudn, hence the lower price. A very good representative crystal from this find.

Most of the Vivianite specimens from this find were either single crystals or isolated crystals on matrix, so to find a beautiful "fan like" cluster such as this is rare. This piece hosts several gorgeous emerald green crystals, many of which are water clear, and have very sharp, lustrous faces. Some minor associated red Sandstone makes for a beautiful color contrast.

Vivianite with BARITE ! -
$225

Less than 1% of ALL the specimens from this were associated with Barite, and this is one of the very few specimens of this material that I purchased. Inside a vug of red Sandstone lies a sharp, lustrous, dark green Vivianite associated with many small, white, bladed Barite crystals. This is a rare association from Tomokoni, and this piece would make a great addition to ay Bolivian reference collection.

This piece is a rather rare "fan like" group of emerald green color, sharp, lustrous, very gemmy Vivianite crystals on minor red Sandstone matrix. It is easy to see that this is a very aesthetic miniature specimen. Despite the fact that one of the crystals on the top is not terminated, the rest of the crystals are virtually pristine. It is very rare to find such an aesthetic group of crystals on matrix from this locality.
