Elbaite Tourmaline

Locality: Paprok, Kunar Province, Afghanistan.

Specimen Size: 4.1 x 1.8 x 1.5 cm (miniature)

I cant say enough about this crystal. When so many Paprok Tourmalines are such a light pastel hue, you rarely see such a remarkable, vivid, incredibly colorful crystal with this kind of gemminess like this one. The large majority of Tourmalines from this world famous locality are often multi-colored, but only the upper 1% have the dark rich color and amazingly gem quality of this crystal. The crystal has a beautiful pink (with a very slight orange overtone) color at the termination which grades into a nearly colorless Achroite area, then changes to a light bluish-green color and then finishes off with an amazingly lush and vibrant green color throughout the rest of the prism. Honestly, I cant remember seeing another crystal from Paprok that was so resonant, especially for the size! The crystal is completely undamaged and quite lustrous with a very sharp, defined pyramidal termination. Ive seen hundreds of these pieces over the years, and compared this piece to several in my personal collection and inventory, but when its all said and done, for an Afghani Tourmaline, the color and gemminess dont get any better. It really is that significant in my mind. If youre a serious collector of gem crystals, this one will really stand out from the others in your collection. An amazing overall gem crystal of top shelf quality.

From the new find in the late Fall of 2005 in Pakistan. This is a very impressive specimen from the most famous Tourmaline locality in Pakistan. To top it off, there is a beautiful rosette of white Albite (var: Cleavelandite) crystals aesthetically flaring off the side of the specimen. I must stress again the great, undamaged and highly lustrous terminations on this specimen. This is a great display piece and a wonderful pegmatite specimen from a classic locality.

Elbaite Tourmaline

Locality: Paprok, Kunar Province, Afghanistan.

Specimen Size: 4.3 x 2.3 x 2.3 cm (miniature)

As far as Tourmalines go, Ive never seen another crystal with the same color combination as this one has. It starts out with a rich pink color at the termination that grades into a slight Achroite colorless zone then into a baby blue green zone which grades into a lilac color and finally ends in a grayish-blue region at the bottom. The photos do not show the colors as accurately as I would prefer, but this one is unique. The crystal is undamaged on all sides and the termination is complete is well. For all the colorations that you see in Tourmaline, this one stands out from the rest. A very rare and attractive multi-color Tourmaline crystal.

From the new find in the late Fall of 2005 in Pakistan. This is a really attractive multi-color specimen from the most famous Tourmaline locality in Pakistan. This crystal features several colors ranging from a very sharp, undamaged and highly lustrous beautiful pink pyramidal termination, but whats really interesting is that the all color zones do not run perpendicular to the c axis, but rather parallel. If you look along the side of the prism you can see the outmost portion is rare colorless Achroite that ranges into a greenish-brown color and finally a dark green color at the center of the crystal. There is a beautiful rosette of white Albite (var: Cleavelandite) crystals aesthetically flaring off the base of the specimen. Elbaite Tourmaline

Locality: Papra, Kunar Province, Afghanistan

Specimen Size: 5.2 x 2.2 x 1.9 cm (small cabinet)
Largest crystal: 1.9 cm.

Last year there was an isolated find of some very interesting and utterly beautiful gem quality Tourmaline crystals from Afghanistan. The coloration and quality of these crystals is as good as Ive seen from any Afghan locality. This piece is one of the best specimens from the find featuring a gorgeous tri-color, nearly gem flawless Tourmaline crystal consisting of a very dark brownish-green termination that gently grades into a lovely light green color then a soft pink color at the base of the crystal sitting atop a gemmy, frosted euhedral Quartz crystal. Top quality gem Tourmaline crystals are difficult enough to find, but to find them on a crystallized matrix, especially a well-formed Quartz crystal is virtually unheard of from most localities. For the aesthetic appeal and overall excellence of the piece, this is indeed a rare specimen from any pegmatite locality.

Locality: Bulochi, Shengus, Skardu Road, Haramosh Mts, Gilgit, Northern Areas, Pakistan.

Specimen Size: 2.8 x 2.4 x 2.2 cm (thumbnail)

I dont often buy Schorls for the simple fact that Tourmalines come in so many colors, it takes something extra for me to buy a black one. This one definitely fits the bill as it features a very well formed prismatic Schorl with good luster and sharpness that is accented with a beautiful flower of Albite flaring off the side. I would definitely categorize it as a competition quality thumbnail, and one of the more attractive Schorls in this size that Ive seen from Pakistan.
