Opal Gems
Gemstone # OpalEth273
Name: Opal
Locality: Ethiopia
Weight: 2.73 cts
Size: 12.77 x 9.16 mm
Price Per Carat: $80
Price For Stone: $218.40
Cut: Modified Pear
Color: Orange w/ "Contra Luz" Color Flash
Clarity: Eye Clean
Cut By Us: Yes (Robert Heath)
Comments: Recently, some very fine Fire Opal gems have been coming out of
Ethiopia. This stone has a strong "Contra Luz" effect
which is a vibrant multi-color flash that appears like "rainbows" within the gem
when it is backlit. The term "Contra Luz" translates to "against the
light" in Spanish, and only a very small percentage of Opals show this effect.
The quantity of these Ethiopian stones certainly seems to be limited,
and fine quality gems are few and far between.
